SAN FRANCISCO ROCK: What do Elvin Bishop and the Starship Starring Mickey Thomas have in common?
Well, Mickey Thomas, for one.
Thomas, who lives in Palm Desert, achieved fame in the mid-1970s when Bishop brought the Southern singer to San Francisco to sing lead vocals and give his band a Southern rock flavor.
They recorded “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” just before Jefferson Starship recruited Thomas to replace Marty Balin. He went on to have hits in the '80s with the soon-to-launch Starship including “Find Your Way Back,” “Sara” and “We Built This City.”
Bishop, one of the great San Francisco blues guitarists with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, will open the show and then sit in with Starship to perform “Fooled Around and Fell In Love” with Thomas. They'll also perform another song with significance to today's economy: “Fanny Mae.”
Jefferson Starship Starring Mickey Thomas and opening act Elvin Bishop, 8 p.m., Spotlight 29 Casino, 46-200 Harrison, Coachella. $25-$50. (800) 585-3737 or 775-5566.
