PAYNE STEVE EDMONSON BAND "OVERNIGHT SENSATION"

The Bobby Rush-style hoochie coochie funk riffed title track opens this disc. This cut gives a lyrical description of Payne’s blues bonafides and associations over the irresistible groove. The funk continues with “Can I Hit It Again.” Think easy going Meters meets James Brown, guitar groovin’, horns punctuatin’ a solid party time. Most of the cuts are originals penned with Edmonson and others, but there are a few covers. The slow standard “Mother-In-Law Blues,” Isaac Hayes’ “Your Good Thing (Is about to End),” “She’s Lookin’ Good/I’ve Never Found a Girl,” a medley that starts with the raucous Stax rave up that somehow morphs into the slow Eddie Floyd lobe ballad. Most interesting is the Charlie Rich penned “Feel Like Going Home,” here given Payne’s gospel treatment. Most of the originals have a Memphis Soul feel, but several trips to Chicago are included such as “Got a Mind to Go to Chicago” with Mitch Kashmar adding the harmonica to the mix. “Uptown Woman, Downtown Man,” has an uptown jazzy feel with predictable lyrics. The bands good humor comes through with the bouncy funk of “No Money, No Honey” and the sly “Bag Full of Doorknobs.” Hands down, this is one of my favorite releases of 2008.
