Quintessential Soul Blues. If you listen to the name dropping title track, you get the sense that Mr. Payne has sung with just about everyone in the Texas Blues scene. If his voice was as commanding back in the day as it is today, you can certainly understand why they wanted him onstage with them. On this CD, in addition to Mr. Edmonson’s tasteful guitar licks, there is a driving rhythm section and some fantastic horns. It’s a very satisfying blend, call it West Coast Texas Urban Blues. My picks include Overnight Sensation (1) Mother-in-Law Blues (3), the very soulful Take a Chance on Me (4), the very smooth Uptown Woman, Downtown Man (6) Your Good Thing (Is About To Come To An End) (8) and the salty blues of Bag Full of Doorknobs (10).
