JACKIE
PAYNE STEVE EDMONSON BAND "OVERNIGHT SENSATION"
Source: Washington Blues Society
Date: 12/2008
Writer: Malcolm Kennedy |
With songs like the funky R&B of óCan I Hit It Again,? the lowdown, slow blues that is óMother In Law Blues,? and a blues shuffle in óMind to Go to Chicago,? horns, female back-up singers and lots of soul, the Jackie Payne/Steve Edmonson Band has got it all going on for their sophomore Delta Groove release. Overnight Sensation is even stronger than 2006’s Master of the Game. The title track observes that óthey call me an overnight sensation; but it‘s sure been a long, long night? gets the CD jump-started right out of the gate. Steve plays a crisp, fiery guitar solo and the punchy Sweet Meet® horns keep it driving. The band members are seasoned pros who have an R&B who’s who on their resumes are all back a second time around, except for a change in trumpet player. Mitch Kashmar adds smokin’ harp to óMind To Go To Chicago.? Jackie is best known for 15 years‘ singing in the Johnny Otis Band, and Steve’s played with the likes of James Cotton, Luther Tucker, Rusty Zinn and others. Steve and Jackie met as members of the San Francisco‘s legendary Dynatones, formed to back Charlie Musselwhite, and other Dynatones alumni include Tommy Castro and Jimmy Pugh. Overnight Sensation is a strong release, and if you like a serious dose of soul in your blues, this one is made to order.
