Payne Steve Edmonson Band, Master of the Game
(Delta Groove). High energy
Urban Soul Blues, complete with organ, horns and
snazzy guitar. But even with all that, it’s
Jackie Payne’s voice that sets these guys
apart. To borrow the title of the third track,
he’s “the real deal.” My favorite
songs here fit right into the Memphis and Muscle
Shoals traditions, but with a West Coast spark.
Recommended: the classic soul of A Fool Named
Me (4), the slow Wake Me Up in San Francisco (8)
and I’ll Take Care of You (13), which has
some lovely saxophone.
