Try some Los Fabulocos if you like your bluesy roots music wide. Fans of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Los Lobos, Texas Tornadoes, and Los Super Seven will like this one. The liner notes suggest getting your beer and snacks before popping this one into your CD player. Good idea. It’s a toe tapper and you don’t want to miss a single beat. There is plenty of snare drum, accordion, and twangy guitar to go around. But these guys don’t restrict themselves to a particular sound… they’re all over the place. Kid Ramos, formerly of the Fabulous Tbirds adds greasy blues like Day After Day and the band covers songs performed by Rockin’ Dopsie like You Ain’t Nuthin But Fine and written by Santiago Jimenez (Santiago is arguably the Elvis of conjunto music and the father of Flaco and Santiago Jr.). whose version of like Un Mojado Sin Licencia (Illegal Without a License). Furthermore Flaco performed with Soug Sahm whose version of Rockin’ Dopsie’s Crazy Baby in on this CD so the six degrees of separation never ends. There are but three original songs on the CD and ten covers… as bonus a couple songs are sung in Spanish…… these guys are all over the place and good at it. They do Clifton Chenier’s All Night Long as a shuffle with background echo hollers throughout. And the Kid Ramos instrumental Burnin’ the Chicken lets you smell the BBQ grill. With some good salsa and chips on the side. This CD is unclassifiable other than just fun all over roots music.
