MITCH
KASHMAR "NICKELS & DIMES"

With
guitarist Junior Watson on board, the best in swinging
West Coast blues is guaranteed. He practically invented
the style, jazzing up the piercing Chicago means of
attack and perfecting it at thousands of gigs and scores
of sessions over the past few decades. Nickels &
Dimes by Mitch Kashmar is a prime example. Kashmar is
a mighty, tuneful vocalist who also plays trainloads
of wicked harp. He debuts several supreme originals
here, like the finger snapping “New York Woman,”
and the tireless “Show it To Me,” proving
himself an accomplished and exciting bandleader all
the while. Among the choice covers are Johnny “Guitar”
Watson’s devil-may-care “Gettin’ Drunk,”
and “I Don’t Play,” a little-known
Willie Dixon blues given a great rumba treatment. Kashmar,
Watson and a band of all-star pals push everything to
the limit, constituting a fantastic album of blues played
with uptown panache, but with plenty of grit between
the grooves. |
