Local
blues harp legend Mitch Kashmar has what it takes to
make it big. His evocative harmonica and convincing
vocals draw upon traditional fare as well as contemporary
textures in order to deliver. Payin’ his dues
with Roy Gaines and backing headliners such as John
Lee Hooker, Jimmy Wither-spoon, Eddie "Cleanhead"
Vinson, Charlie Musselwhite and Lowell Fulson has given
him all the right tools. As evidenced by his latest
recording, now’s the time for him to make his
move. Kashmar sings with a convincing, buoyant spirit
and fills each song with blues harp joy. His "tin
sandwich" provides passionate refrains that bring
each message home.
He’s joined here by guitarist Junior Watson, who
delivers searing solo work and complementary accompaniment.
Guests Arthur Adams and Abu Talib sit in for one tune
each, giving the program an added flavor. Kashmar colors
each tune with his sweet harmonica tone, as the band
drives with confidence. "Whiskey Drinkin’
Woman" and "Gettin’ Drunk" come
from the worldwide blues scene, while most of the program’s
selections are Kashmar’s comfortable originals.
He’s captured the spirit wholeheartedly. "Runnin’
Off at the Mouth" features the leader’s driving
harp in a superb instrumental romp, while much of the
program centers on vocalized stories. Adams’ "Knock
‘em Dead" provides a pregnant message, as
the guest bluesman sings about the possibilities. Kashmar
joins him in a celebration of the spirit of modern blues,
opening up doors that swing wide and freely. |
